ABOUT THE 'A CLUB'

BULLDOG PRIDE

The A Club is composed of former AHS Lettermen from all sports and organizations who promote pride among past, present, and future Bulldogs.

 

Our goal is to celebrate and recognize Bulldogs who have represented Albuquerque High School with excellence and honor in their athletic endeavors and beyond.

BIO'S

Andy Rivera

Andy was a member of the class of 1987, he is a two year letterman in Basketball. He was part of the 22-4 team who played in the last game of the AHS/Hobbs rivalry, to this day it has the record for a semi-final attendance of 15778. Andy is part of the New Mexico Boxing Hall of fame committee and was a two time New Mexico Golden Gloves Champion. Andy and his groups have spearheaded the revival of The A Club. His vision is to bring diversity, and bridging the gap between generations, while holding value to old traditions and bringing in new ideas.

Loretta Gallegos Vasquez 

Loretta Gallegos Vasquez grew up in the Old Town area of Albuquerque where she attended Lew Wallace and Dolores Gonzales Elementary, Washington Middle School, then graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1982. She continued her education at the University of New Mexico where she received an associate degree in Secretarial Studies along with her bachelor’s degree in Business Education. While attending UNM, she was also a member of the Chaparral dance team for 3 years. Loretta then went on to receive her qualification to teach special education by taking additional classes through New Mexico Highlands University. Currently, Mrs. Vasquez has been a classroom teacher for 34 years with the Albuquerque Public School District. She has taught Special Education along with Dual Enrollment courses through the Central New Mexico Community College. She was also the dance team coach/sponsor for the Albuquerque High School Bulldoggie dance team for 22 years and was awarded Coach of the Year in 2008 by the New Mexico Activities Association and that same year was an honorary alumnus at the 2008 Bulldog graduation. She was also awarded Educator of the Year award by the Hispano Chamber of Commerce in 2021 and was also featured in Albuquerque the Magazine as one of Above Top Educators

Dominic Rivas

Dominic was part of the 1993 Boys State Championship Team.  Dominic was one of the Team Captains, he was a key contributor to leading the Bulldogs to the State title.​ Off the court Dominic remained committed to the AHS community, by giving back to AHS graduates through a Scholarship fund, his family and proud history of Rivas’ who attended AHS since the 1960’s and continues to pave the way for future generations to come. Dominic and his wife Blanca Rivas, have three kids, Dominic Jr, Breanna and Marissa, who were successful athletes in their own way. 

Jessica Martinez 

Jessica (Santistevan) Martinez, Class of 1990, is a third generation Bulldog. She followed in her mother's footsteps, serving AHS as a Bulldog cheerleader from 1987-1990. Jessica was a member of Albuquerque High’s National Championship and International Championship cheer teams in 1989. She also served as President of the AHS Staters Club, and Vice President of the Hispanic Student Organization. Jessica went on to complete her undergraduate degree at UNM (1996) and her masters degree at the College of Santa Fe (2005). She was a high school educator for 20 years as a teacher (including 11 years at AHS) and activities director; she is currently the Policy Analyst and Government Liaison for Albuquerque Public Schools. She was named Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year in 2021. Jessica coached Cheerleading at Albuquerque High for 17 years, leading the Bulldogs to State Championships for Co-ed Cheer in 2004 and 2010, a 3rd place finish  in 2007, and a 2nd place finish in 2009. She is a wife of 25 years and the proud mother of a 19 year old son who attends UNM. 

 

Manny Otero

Manny Otero is a Letterman and graduate of Albuquerque High School, class of 1994. He played for the Bulldogs Basketball team where they won a District Championship and a State Championship in 1993. The Championship was legendary Coach Hulsman’s 5th of 7 State Championships throughout his time at Bulldog City. After high school he earned a basketball scholarship and went on to play for Central Arizona College and graduated from prestigious Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1999. Manny is currently a teacher and coach for the past 17 years at West Mesa. He coached Volleyball, Girls Tennis, and is currently the Head Coach of the Girls basketball team. In his tenure with the Mustangs he has 2 District Championships, 3 consecutive Metro Championships, and the school only State Basketball Championship in 2019. Manny is married to Mychele and share four kids together. Denise, Nazareth, Ezra and Uriah. He looks forward to supporting our former, current, and future Bulldog athletes with the “A” Club organization.

Natalie Sanchez

Natalie Sanchez, a proud alumnus of the Albuquerque High School Class of 1998 and third generation Bulldog, has been a dedicated member of the APS community for over 20 years. During her time at AHS, she was a member of the Varsity Cheerleading Team, embodying school spirit and leadership. Today, Natalie continues to inspire and shape young minds as an educator, bringing passion, experience, and commitment to her role in the classroom. Her decades of service reflect her unwavering dedication to education and her community.

Trini Salas

Trini is happily married to Viola for 37 wonderful years, and together they have one son and three daughters. His family has grown to include nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. With 30 years of experience as a teacher in the Albuquerque Public Schools and 22 years as a summer supervisor for the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation, Trini is proud to have dedicated his career to education and community service. He is a graduate of New Mexico Highlands University in 1983 and he is a proud basketball player from Albuquerque High from 1975 to 1977 where he was the captain for the state champions. Trini's roots in this community run deep.
